CrossFit, what is it? and where did it come from?

CrossFit has become one of the most popular training programs in the world. For those who didn’t know, CrossFit is a powerful conditioning and strength program that has several goals including improvement of cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, muscle and overall strength, mobility, stamina, reflexes, power, balance, precision and coordination. This special program was created to provide a complete body workout that mixes parts of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and some other physical activities like gymnastics, weight lifting, powerlifting, plyometrics, isometrics, core training and other activities that are able to keep the body prepared for any situation.

This fitness program is designed in a way that makes it suitable for any individual regardless of their current physical preparedness. In addition, those who are practicing this program are able to make advance without risking their health (injuries, health issues etc.). The only way to succeed in this type of training is to be persistent and committed. CrossFit is beneficial for beginners, advanced practitioners and professional gymnasts and athletes.

CrossFit is usually practiced in huge warehouses which provide group classes. People are encouraged to exercise 4-5 times each week. Of course, thanks to modern technology, people can practice some CrossFit exercises from the comfort of their home. But, what about CrossFit’s history? Who created it and how did the story begin?

It all started thanks to Greg Glassman an ex-gymnast with vast experience in this activity. This man found out that with the help of a barbell and dumbbells, ordinary gymnasts can become much stronger compared to other gymnasts. In the past, most gymnasts were focused on bodyweight exercises because they thought that using dumbbells and barbells can have negative effects on their results. However, Greg Glassman decided to prove that they were wrong.

More than 20 years ago, back in 1995, Greg Glassman has founded his first gym located in Santa Cruz in California. His unique approach grabbed the attention of the public, so it didn’t take much time before he was selected to train the Police Department of Santa Cruz. Actually, this hiring happened only few months after he opened his gym.

When it comes to his civilian work, in most cases he has provided private training with individuals. He preferred one-on-one training in the beginning. However, as his new training approach gained popularity he didn’t have time to teach all the people who were interested in CrossFit. At this time, Glassman realized that group classes are the best answer to meet the public demand for such classes. In addition to the higher profit he made he also found out that people tend to get better results when they are training in groups. So, it was a win-win situation for everyone involved. Greg Glassman also realized that he has enough time for individual classes too. This is the moment when CrossFit as we know it was formed.

Technically speaking, CrossFit was formally founded in 2000. This is the year when the company revealed its first affiliate – CrossFit North located in Seattle in Washington. Today, there are more than 3.500 affiliates in dozens of countries around the world.
